Andrew Sommers and his 1957 Ford Thunderbird
My 1957 Ford Thunderbird has been in my family since 1974 and was originally owned by my father. Before purchasing this car, my parents had a 1956 Thunderbird for 6 years....so with the exception of 1 year, there has always been a 2 seater T-Bird in my life!
Dad gave me the car in 2014, and in 2016 it underwent a frame on restoration that was completed in 2018. This car has a rare feature. It is equipped with a power memory seat—a Dial-o-Matic Power Seat that Ford offered for 1 year in 1957 and then didn’t offer this option again until the early 80’s.
I also own a 1968 Thunderbird that was my first old car purchased with my former wife in 2003 and it has had a partial frame off restoration. Along the way I also had the pleasure of cruising in; 2 pick up trucks, 2 other Thunderbirds and a 1 owner 1972 LeMan’s, as well as a 1 of 1 Mustang. However, for sentimental reasons my 1957 Thunderbird is my favourite.
I am proud to say my 1957 Thunderbird was a class winner at an all Ford show in 2019, put on by the Durham Region Mustang Club, and also won best 50’s Ford at the inaugural Gravenhurst car show in 1992.
The car was used in a few special events...in 1996, I drove former MPP’s Derwyn Shea and Isabel Bassett in the car for a parade, and in 2002 this car was used for my wedding.
I joined the Markham Stouffville Cruisers in the spring of 2023, and I am having a fun time getting to know the members through cruise nights and other club activities.
